  15. Purpose:
  16. User Select allows you to quickly open directories or files and execute
  17. commands by selecting them from a list. This obviously has advantages over
  18. the other methods around; pinboard, which clutters up your desktop
  19. background (AND covers up your picture of Madonna!); Menon which either has
  20. long menus or complicated menu structures if you have a lot of directories,
  21. or files; and TinyDirs, which is really ridiculous if you have more than two
  22. files on it (as well as Edit, CFS, a hard disc, printers drivers ...). User
  23. Select was written to solve this problem by having a single window which you
  24. can close when you don't need it. Simple!
  25.  
  26. Use:
  27. User Select loads onto the right-hand side of the icon bar, and opens its
  28. main window at the same time. This window is divided into two; on the left
  29. is a list of names, and on the right are three buttons, Prefs, Add and Save.
  30. Clicking on a name in the list with SELECT opens/runs/executes the
  31. directory/file/ command it refers to; clicking on a name in the list with
  32. ADJUST opens a window giving info about that object; clicking MENU in this
  33. area opens a menu with one option; Remove. Clicking on this removes the
  34. entry you clicked over.

  36. Clicking on Prefs opens the preferences window; this controls general
  37. behaviour of User Select. The No Write option will not allow any icons or
  38. entries to be added, removed or saved if selected. Open window on load does
  39. just that, and execute <filename> on load will execute the file as soon as
  40. User Select loads. None of these options actually affects User Select until
  41. it is next loaded, and so the structure and settings must be saved for them
  42. to have any effect.

  44. Clicking on Add opens a window where you can write the identifying
  45. name (used in the list) and the full pathname (this can be a system variable
  46. if required) for files or directories, or the command. You also specify here
  47. whether it will be a file, command or icon. With files and commands it
  48. doesn't matter which type is selected, but if you select icon then you
  49. should also specify a sprite name and a position on the icon bar. Util and
  50. App are the normal left and right, FS and Sys App are only under RiscOS 3
  51. and put them with the relevant groups at the far left and right.

  53. Icons on the iconbar will execute their command or load/run their file when
  54. clicked on with SELECT/ADJUST; clicking MENU opens a menu with two options,
  55. Definition and Remove. Definition leads to a window as for clicking ADJUST
  56. on an entry in the list, and remove removes the icon.

  58. Clicking on Save saves the list so that next time User Select will load with
  59. the directories, files, commands and icons you want. Notice that there is no
  60. warning if you attempt to quit without having saved the settings and list
  61. first.

  63. Settings:
  64. The settings file contains a few comments to enable you to quickly set up
  65. your most commonly-used directories, files and commands in the STRUC ...
  66. ENDSTRUC section. However, there is no explanation of the SETIINGS ...
  67. ENDSETTINGS section. (These can, of course, be set from the Prefs window).
